SAFE ONLINE?? EPUKA AIBU

For those on social medias especially those on Facebook, there has been nondiscriminating ashaming hacking of accounts, a few of my friends have called me in desperation after being informed of  graphic stuff least to their knowledge or consent already posted under their names. Therefore I decided to put this up, share!!!

Disclaimer I am not a nerd/expert just a friend trying to bridge it. I will be inviting an expert to write more on this, watch this space.

THE BASICS
First of all lets starts with the basic precautions
1.Think before you click.-This is where we mess up, clicking on those weird links,’ cjui*’ how to lose weight in a week; Make money online fast and easy;’ Click here to see the full picture or video;. Who is your best friend  or who you will marry;. Kindly and I insist, think before you click. If its looks fishy, don’t go fishing, it’s probably a hack in waiting.
2. Keep the secret password secret. Of course this goes without saying, never share your password with anyone.  I have heard a case of dating folks who shared passwords and when they broke up, one went ahead to post nasty things online on their partners account. Never share your password. Again let your password be unique, not you birthday or your mobile number or your middlename plus 1234. Make it hard for one to guess.
3. Always logout. When you finish using Facebook especially on areas computers are shared publicly, in the office, cybercafés, computer labs. Kindly logout. I have been a victim of this; allow me to share, early last year I was in Kisumu for a conference, I was chatting with someone then my boss abruptly sent me to pick up some stuff, i walked out, left my facebook window open, only to come back and find someone had sent an insult on my chat thread, just imagine!!. Log out. Don’t just close the window.

4.Beware of those  invites. Applications especially games and surveys are places where you have to give permission to a 3rd party for access to your personal information. Think before you add.

Last but not least.
5. Install a good antivirus and update it frequently.Avoid downloading illegal softwares and torrents. Also, avoid installing free toolbars(i hate thick toolbars, they slow down your browser ) and other such spam software. Always scan third-person's flash and pen drives before using them on your computer.

Those are the basics that go without saying, now here are more security options available for you on Facebook. These security options makes your Facebook Account Secure and Hack Proof.
1) You can enable Login Notification so that whenever anybody (or a hacker) tries to login with your User ID and Password, you will receive a Notification on your phone. This can help you know that it's time to change your password right now because the hacker has got your password and is trying to log in to your Facebook Account. To Enable Login Nofication
Go to Home -> Account Settings -> Security -> Login Alerts. Put a Check Mark on your preffered option and click Save Changes button.

2) Always check your Active Sessions. If you notice any unfamiliar location or device, it means your Facebook Account is at risk. To Check Active Sessions
Go to Home -> Account Settings -> Security -> when you are logged in.

3) Enable Secure Browsing to make your account more secure.
Go to Home-> Account Settings -> Security >><< play around with those setting to secure yourself well.

Finally here's how you stop those crazy videos that everyone but you can see from appearing on your timeline. Most of these videos are pornographic in nature and have embarrassed people indiscriminatory from parents to pastors to political/business leaders only for them to post, “Dear friends, my Facebook page has been hacked and someone is sending very dirty images and videos. Kindly note am not the one sending, my apologies”

Epuka aibu with the following:
1. Go to the little padlock icon at the top-right of your page, next to the notifications (globe) icon. Click on it.
2. At the bottom of the drop-down menu, click on 'See more settings'.
3. There is a menu to the left of the page that will appear; click on 'Timeline and Tagging.
4. There are three questions on this page; choose 'Who can add things to my timeline?'
5. See the question: 'Review posts that friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline?' Turn that on.
6. The next time you are tagged in one such post, you will receive a notification asking you if you can add it to your timeline. It’s advisable not add just any posts ,don’t go fishing my friend. If in doubt, kindly message the tagger and ask them to clarify if they tagged you in a post.

If you see something fishy about your friends account/post, don't judge or assume them, help them. pick up your phone and inform them as fast as possible, lets us be a society which takes care of one another.
Baraka.
